I had a presentation to the big boss yesterday. Of course, everyone knows that you have to be at your best when there's a meeting with the boss ;) Gotta always give a good impression, right?

So, here's what I wore:

Happy days are definitely here with bright hues filling up my closet again ;) I think you can spot me a mile away hehe... I stuck to a white work bag, a neutral-colored watch, and a lucite necklace to balance my overall look.

Oh, and I'm wearing a Kenneth Cole watch from L Time Studio with NATO strap from Asprey.

The strap gave a whole different look to the sleek Kenneth Cole timepiece, as the striped nylon strap adds a casual and sporty feel. Asprey watches are great "makeover" add-ons, don't you think so? :)

Shabu-Shabu Time

We had lunch yesterday at Gansu-Shabuway in Power Plant Mall:

The menu only serves vegetables and beef (Meyer and Kobe beef), with two kinds of soup (seaweed and spicy miso). The seaweed broth was bland, but I loved it when I mixed it with tons of sesame sauce

... along with a dash of minced garlic, minced radish, and chopped onion leeks :D

Our family agrees that you can just order their normal Meyer beef since you really can't tell the difference when cooked in shabu-shabu style.

The broth is, of course, unlimited... along with their rice. Here's how my meal was: rice, cooked beef in their soy sauce/vinegar dipping, and broth mixed with sesame sauce ;P

Menu is quite limited, which makes ordering simple and fast. Ramen and udon noodles are also available, which we ordered for our son---who wiped out his bowl of noodles fast!

Orange is the Color of the Year

Yes, you read it right! Orange is the color du jour for 2012. I expected as much, with Celine having much to do with re-introducing this color last year with the leather totes and "luggages." Don't you agree?

So, with this in mind, I decided to paint my nails in shades of oranges at Posh Nails in Connecticut Street in Greenhills

Just had to share that I'm pretty impressed with their toilet, btw ;)

To get squeaky clean for the New Year, I got myself a hand and foot scrub, along with my usual maniped

These were my color choices:

Reminded myself that orange is the color for 2012, so I opted to get these shades of oranges: orange sorbet for my fingernails and red orange for my toe nails :D

True Blu

I just had to share this article that came out last month on the first year anniversary of Radisson Blu:

It was my first time to attend an event in Cebu, and we were pleasantly surprised with how the Cebuanos partied at the First Year Anniversary of Raddison Blu last weekend.

The newest and grandest hotel’s ballroom was transported into a 1920s themed venue, with their staff dressed in bright blue fringe shift dresses, boas and feathered headpieces. And they weren’t the only ones who followed the ’20 look, the venue was filled with gentlemen in dashing suits and hats, and ladies wearing accessories such as headbands, gloves, pearl necklaces, fascinators, and feathered boas.

The citizens of the Queen City of the South sure do know how to get into the fashion game. Here are some of them who took the extra effort to look the part:

Cybill Gayatin went for a black-and-white ensemble that’s very Coco Chanel, and topped it off with a beaded head wrap she had made out of an old beaded vest.

David Cua was all about prints as he went for a striped necktie and plaid blazer. He kept it sleek and clean in black and white tones.

Katsy Borromeo picked a sheer black shift dress and accentuated it with a long pearl necklace and a black rosette headband.

Carla Herrera’s thin black headband and gold-and-pearl neckpiece were the perfect accompaniments to her little black dress.

Sheryl Songsong proved that all you need is a fur scarf to get the roaring ’20s look.

Best dressed awards went to Yvette Vaas and Bong Deiparine. A special mention wento to Jessie Glova for the effort.

You gotta hand it to these guests. My media colleagues all agree that Cebuanos know how to party and how to dress for the party! Congratulations again, Radisson Blu :D

Got myself a copy of Good Housekeeping this month:

I tried following PBL (Pinoy Biggest Loser) as much as I can, but it's been busy the last few months of 2011 that I lost track of what happened to the show. But, I am very amazed at how much the contestants lost—you should check out the inside pages and find out for yourself. They also have a section where they feature other "losers" with one of them losing more than 200lbs. You really should check this out.

Another reason why I got myself a copy is that I am featured, along with the likes of Frances Amper Sales, and Rissa Mananquil-Trillo, on being a multi-tasking mom. Hope you grab yourself a copy and be inspired on how we live out lives :D

Blog surfing is something most of us do on a daily basis. And that keeps up the pressure on bloggers to produce more exciting material for their readers. One blog that has positively touched the lives of its readers is by Jenni Epperson. More than her regular posts on style and trend updates, she reveals another side of her life as a loving mom and wife who makes easy-to-cook, gourmet-looking entrees for her family. She tops it off by sharing food styling and table setting tips to make family meal times extra meaningful.

Style Kit: What is your most memorable celebration?
Jenni Epperson: My daughter Aryanna's first birthday was the most memorable one. It was the first big event for my family and I wanted it to be very personal and special so I didn't hire a party planner. It was simple and intimate, and to top it off, I also invited a nearby orphanage to join in the celebration. It became the start of many successful memorable parties I hosted for my family years later, and it was also a way of giving back.

SK: What is your favorite occasion/holiday and why?
JE: Date night! Many would say something more generic, but date night is a beautiful occasion to prepare, and it's also very random. You can do it out of celebration for any event, like an anniversary, but you can also just decide to give your partner a treat! It helps make the fire of love stronger between couples!

SK: What is your favorite dish to cook and why?
JE: In my book I made a super simple shrimp scampi pasta that can pass as a "fancy" meal but trust me it was super easy and super yummy! That's my thing—it has to be easy to whip up because the modern woman doesn't have much time to spare!

SK: Can you share with us at least five hosting tips for the holidays?
1. Think of new gift-giving ideas. If you're planning to throw a party, make a different version of secret santa by putting in a theme like "must have for the year ahead" or "reminders of the year that has passed.” Play around with nostalgia and memories, it always makes for an awesome get-together.

2. Don't sweat the prep. It's your celebration just as anyone else’s, so don't try to do it all on your own! Get the whole family to help by delegating. It also strengthens the bond.

3. Go for colors or metallic hues! Whether it's for your fashion or table setting, these two styles make maximum impact with minimal effort. It's also the perfect fashion palette this holiday season! Try sapphire, ruby or emerald colors and mix them up with neutrals!

4. Scared of holiday fat? Go the extra mile and research healthier recipe alternatives so that your food can taste the same but be less guilty.

5. Make a new tradition. Whether it's making a personal and unique decor for the tree or whipping up a signature cookie recipe, find a new tradition that you can do in the years to come.

Because it's Christmas and CDO/Iligan needs our help...

This 28^th of December, 2011, Seventh HIGH is holding a charity drive for the victims of typhoon Sendong in participation with DSWD. Seventh HIGH, a year old boutique nightclub in Manila, has been known to throw special charity events for different causes, including Breast Cancer Awareness, Pediatric Cancer Wards, and even HIV efforts. In light of the recent tragedy in Mindanao, Seventh HIGH seals 2011 with what the hope would be their biggest call to compassion.

The event is entitled SOS: SeventhHIGH Operation Sendong. Raising awareness among the urbanites of Manila, it encourages its attendees to help by bringing donations or pay door charge in order to be part of the party. Donations and door proceeds will be given to DSWD in their relief efforts for the victims of typhoon Sendong.

Supported by a large roster of celebrity and model dj’s, bartenders, and guests, the young club hopes to give its attendees an inspirational celebration of humanity that brings together music, fashion, and arts in a unified effort to revive Mindanao. SOS is expected to be a big effort that calls to action different sectors and age groups in cosmopolitan Manila.

Worst Flight Ever

I have a hard time sleeping now, so I might as well share with you my horrible flight experience with a certain airline earlier tonight.

Flying with children is no joke, more so when I'm seated far away from my son and the nanny. I was booked a business class seat (which they insisted even if I asked for an economy seat) by the company who invited me to cover an event. I thought of bringing my son and opted to buy economy seats for him and the nanny, as it was a very short flight. It's not practical to spend so much for a short trip, in my opinion.

Unfortunately, my son didn't want to leave my side, but the flight attendant insisted that I move him back with the nanny since a passenger was complaining about the little one (who was very quiet and well-behaved at that time). I knew my two-year-old son was going to cry and make a scene, so I tried to talk my way out of it—to no avail. So, while I was in the economy area with the nanny, trying to pacify the little one... my friends overheard the flight attendant and one of the heads talking trash about me behind the closed curtain.

Things my friends overheard were:

"Bakit kasi isang business class ticket lang binili nya?" (Why did she buy just one business class ticket?)

"Sino ba kasama nya sa likod?" (Who is with her at the back?)

My friend asked the flight attendant to come over to where he was seated. He told her nicely that it was very rude of them to talk about me, and that everyone can hear what they were talking about. I'm not sure at what point in their conversation did she answer back, but her defense was that I was being hard on her. Okay, granted that I was, I don't think any passenger deserved to be talked about that way, right?

He even asked if he can file a complaint, and the head came out and gave him their IDs and a feedback form. I personally think that they were very arrogant to have given their IDs. The fact that they gave them could only mean two things:

1. they were confident our complaint won't reach their head office

2. they think they didn't do anything wrong

I will definitely raise this to the company, not because I want revenge, but I think they need to know how their front liners are doing at work.

Don't get me wrong though. My flight from Manila to Cebu was a dream. All the flight attendants were so attentive, seeing how my son was crying almost the whole time before we took off—we were delayed, hence my son was very agitated and bored. You know how two-year-olds are :( One of the senior ones even approached me and asked how I was doing. A simple question like "How are you?" can make all the difference.

This flight back to Manila? Not one apology from the two of them. But one of their co-flight attendants came back and apologized on their behalf. So the whole company is not to be blamed here. I just hope that these two will be reprimanded for what they did. Maybe being an FA is not the right job for these two.

Oliver Tolentino’s experimentations with our indigenous fabrics have caught the attention of Hollywood stars, like Cee Lo Green, Macy Gray, Vivica Fox and Sophia Bush. His LA shop is fast becoming a fashionable destination for celebrities.

Tolentino came back home recently to stage his very first gala show, hosted by Metro and Metro Society magazines together with Samsung.

His Metrowear Icon show, held at Sofitel, featured a 75-piece couture collection, incorporating native fabrics such as piña, abaca, raw silk cocoon, and jute: “I'm trying to promote our fabrics so these great skills that have been passed down for 500 years continue into the next generation and keep our skilled kababayans employed,” he says.

Old Hollywood was his inspiration—pieces that are classic in cut and style, but full of drama through the use of ruffles, appliqués, and printed fabrics, to name a few. “Old Hollywood was something that inspired me as a kid in the province. We didn't have boutiques so I'd watch old movies with my mother and I was always interested in the fashion. She'd buy me international magazines at Clark and I'd look at the celebrities. Since I'm now dressing up people in Hollywood, I wanted to modernize the look.”

Spring was definitely in the air, as his collection included rosettes, floral hues, and floral-printed fabrics that give off an enchanted, fairy-like aura. To add to the mood, models moved with ballerina-like, graceful steps that were feminine and alluring. Male models, in turn, came out dashing in their barongs. “The fabric is a more luxurious version of the piña. The embroidery is a little more elegant and refined. I lined them and cut them like a suit. I loved the way they looked on the guys when they walked out,” Tolentino explains.

It was a couture collection that showcased the perfectionist in Tolentino, with each piece crafted meticulously. Tolentino obviously gives his all when it comes to designing clothes—this collection was three months in the making.

Style Kit: How and when did you start making clothes?
Oliver Tolentino: I started as a boy with sketches of dresses in all my school books. When I was about seven, I would stay inside while the other kids played and watch my mother's seamstress. I started altering my brothers' hand-me-downs so it would be like new clothes for me.

SK: When and why did you leave for the US?
I expanded into the US in July 2009 because I always dreamed of having a shop in Hollywood and dressing celebrities. Since I still have my Makati shop and videoconference with clients here, I don't feel like I've left.

SK: Filipino fabrics like piña, abaca, and raw silk cocoon are obviously your favorites. Is there a story behind your love of these fabrics?
This question always surprises me because I'm a Filipino so it's not unusual for me to have worked with piña before. I believe that if we Filipino designers don't promote our native fabrics, then who will? Eco fashion is a hot topic around the world right now, so it's just added enjoyment for me to be able to work with our native fabrics and it's such an interesting thing to do. I have tried to take our "old" fabrics and modernize them and show that couture can be created from them. I was so surprised that a friend of mine told me after the show that he was disappointed I didn't use piña in my Metrowear Icon collection. I informed him that over half of my collection was piña, abaca, raw silk cocoon, water lily, and jute! I took that as an extreme compliment that I had used our native fabrics in such a way that they looked like luxurious international fabrics. That has been my goal and for a Filipino not to recognize our fabrics, that's high praise for the end result of my efforts.

SK: Your American business partner, Andrew Caruthers, shared with us that you traveled all the way to the provinces and met with the people who make these fabrics. Could you share with us how the experience was like?
My business partner, an American, Andrew Caruthers, and I both have met with the Fiber Industry Development Authority in Manila and also DTI in Aklan about how to promote Philippine fabrics in order to support weavers in Aklan and the embroiderers of Lumban. DTI Aklan toured us around the different weavers and we observed how piña is made—literally, as someone pulled the leaves from the pineapple plants and stripped it down before us. I gave advice on the types of fabrics I'd like to see from them. Since then they have produced new fabrics that are extremely creative and high in quality.

SK: We hear that you intentionally veered away from black, red, and white gowns for this Metrowear show. Why is that? Is it because you want to promote colors?
While everyone knows I love colors, that's not the reason. The reason was that I wanted to challenge myself. Black, red, and white are such popular evening gown colors because they capture the eye and dazzle. For this collection—and I wonder if people who attended noticed—I excluded black, red, and white. That forced me to create couture pieces out of colors that are more challenging to create "wow" pieces from. It was just something I wanted to see if I could do, especially in Manila, and it was a rewarding challenge. The show director kept saying this was his first show ever not to close with black gowns or white wedding gowns.

SK: We enjoyed Kuh Ledesma’s walk on the runway. We’d love to know what is it you like about her.
Firstly, almost everyone in the fashion industry in that room knew that Kuh Ledesma does not walk for anyone! She never has! This was her first time and that was the shock factor. Then to see her have so much fun with it and pose on stage was a treat. Kuh is someone special to me because everyone knows she has discriminating taste. I was touched when she agreed to be a part of the event, and then was surprised myself when she agreed to walk. If nothing else, I'll always have that Kuh Ledesma honored me by walking for the first time in my first Philippine gala!

Not too long ago, we shared a restaurant during lunch time with Tessa Prieto-Valdes and Kaye Tinga. Both mentioned they were working on a fundraising event, which turned out to be the annual Red Charity Gala, which was to raise funds for the Philippine Red Cross and the Assumption High School Batch 1981 Foundation.

When you have two very stylish organizers like Prieto and Tinga, it is no surprise that this year’s gala shouldn’t be missed. Dubai-based designer Michael Cinco graced the prestigious event this year as the featured designer, showcasing a 40-piece collection at the Makati Shangri-la hotel.

Cinco seeks his inspiration from his travels. The latest of which was a trip to Greece, including stops at Athens and Santorini. Most probably enamored with the wonderful sunsets of old Greece, Cinco started his collection in neutral hues such as light gray to bolder hues like yellow, orange, red, and brown. We love the extra detail that went with the collection, such as an overload of bangles and shoulder accents that seemed to look like body armor. A great contrast, if I may add, Cinco’s feminine silhouettes.

Pieces were designed to fall delicately on the body. Some were figure-hugging, others, voluminously flowing. All are delicately and intricately fabricated with Cinco’s trademarks of crystals, embroidery, and embellishments.

Cinco ended the show with a bridal set and his muse, Georgina Wilson, wearing a mermaid-cut gown with sheer lace-work sleeves that gave off an illusion of white embroidery on her arms. A triple layer of the hemline added delicate volumes for that dramatic entrance.

Michael Cinco is now preparing for World Fashion Week in New York as the Philippine representative this November. We’re pretty sure his collection will win the audience’s hearts as it did us and Dubai.

I used to design and sell accessories, and I still have my tools (and more!) at home that can fill a small room. So, from time to time, I'd get inspired to make a few pieces. If I can't find what I'm looking for, I'll make my own.

Here's a super easy DIY for you---a eureka moment, actually! Tassle earrings are so in-trend right now, thanks to Louis Vuitton. I still have quite a lot of these, as I wasn't able to sell them a few years back. I guess nobody was brave enough to wear them then, but thanks to Louis Vuitton, I see a lot of the girls now in these light-weight danglers.

I have the basic ones, in black, gray and brown. But for my outfit last night for Metrowear Icon, I had to wear peach-colored ones, so I went to Carolina's and bought myself these for P5 each.

I was going to use my tools and make them into earrings, but ran out of time. So, I came up with this idea to just shoot the pin of my earrings into the loop of the tassle. You can opt to put it in front of your ear lobe (if you have bigger earrings), or at the back like me.

Pretty cool idea, don't you think? :)

Definitely the Smartest TV

Last two weeks ago, I was invited by Samsung to spend a night at Hotel H2O to try their Smart TV. I was pretty excited and flattered that they included me in their list of invitees: 1. I've been curious why it is the "smart" TV; 2. I've been having a hard time booking a stay at Hotel H20 for our son---I was even planning on spending his 2nd birthday there last June but it was sooooo fully booked!

You can read about our stay in Hotel H2O here and here. For this post, let me talk about the Samsung Smart TV, which I have definitely fallen in love with ;)

First, you just gotta love how thin and slim it is:

Next, the frontal view. Notice that you can hardly see the bezel (or what we call the TV frame).

Kang Yunje, Vice President of Samsung’s TV Design Group, perfected an aesthetic that bears tremendous purpose. “We wanted to remove the barrier between the real world and the TV that is visually distracting: the bezel,” Mr. Kang said. “The design concept centered on the television. If we see the real world in three dimensions, and the TV offers three dimensional images, then everything we see has the potential to be in three dimensions. Designing a slim bezel was about removing the frame that limited our view of the three-dimensional world.”
Since Mr. Kang joined the company in 1994, it has been his dream to create a television without a bezel. In 2008, Samsung embarked on a journey towards this goal. In two years, they managed to whittle down 54 millimeters to 28 millimeters. After Yoon Boo-Keun, President of Samsung’s Visual Display, set out a mission to create a bezel-less TV in 2010, it only took them a year to turn the dream into reality.

“We were told that reducing the bezel slimmer than 7 millimeters would be impossible, and that the image quality would be lost as the bezel became thinner,” Mr. Kang said. “We ran numerous trials to see what worked and what did not but eventually pulled ourselves through the toughest period.”

After much trial and error, the development team was slowly inching its way to the ultimate goal. In 2011, the creation of the LED D8000 proved that an ultra-slim bezel was indeed a possibility. The LED D8000 appears slimmer, yet it maintains a superior viewing experience—the perfect marriage of design and technology.

Now, the test! We tried watching regular TV shows first, and we love how even if the show isn't in HD yet, it feels like it already is! The LED has MicroDimming technology that works on playing the cleanest whites, the darkest blacks, and the most vibrant hues.

We took it up a notch by trying out their featherweight 3D glasses.

These glasses, along with the LED's built-in 2D to 3D conversion system, can make flat 2D movies or pictures appear life-like in real time! Amazing, isn't it? Not only that, we are amazed with the stock sound system that comes with the Smart TV's 3D Sound Effect and 3D HyperReal Engine. No need to buy and install those extra speakers ;)

It's so smart, right? And there's more! We tried tinkering what else this baby has to offer and went to this screen. See the small screen on the top right? That's your TV/movie screen, which means you can still watch while you surf the net ;)

The Samsung Smart Hub is a media portal to the world wide web. It's could be overwhelming at first glance, but it's pretty easy to use.

Samsung Smart TV is, no doubt, the start of what future TV's will become. More than just your TV, its offerings include what computers/laptops offer---making it the smartest TV indeed! Mr. Kang and the rest of Samsung's TV Design Group are definitely cooking up even better smart TVs. “Samsung believes in pushing the company to its limit, if there is one,” Mr. Kang said. “We innovate and change paradigms. From the top executive to our engineers, we take risks for good design and befitting quality products.”

We’ve noticed a welcome change at Lacoste shoe shops, with styles that are geared towards a more polished and feminine look. Think Audrey Hepburn and the ‘50s era, and you’ve got ballet flats, loafers and peep-toe wedges dominating the store.

All branded with the signature croc logo, these shoe models have kept the casual and comfy vibe of the shoe line. I'm liking the Quenza design, a slim and pointy toe pair of flats that comes with lace-up details that’s a mix of urban chic. The white-colored rubber sole makes it an interesting piece, too!

Another pair that I'm eyeing are their slip-on loafers called the Concours, which comes in suede materials in colors blue and gray. Perfect for walking all day long, and even for driving (with its rubber driver sole), this androgynous pair gives adds a tomboyish flair to your outfit.

Other pairs that you should watch out for are the Calavante—a fabric-colored wedge made of brushed cotton that comes in bright hues to cheer you up.

Another addition to the loafer style is the Courcelle 2. With its tassel tongue detail and delicate leather lace bow, this tan full-grain leather is the perfect accompaniment to your daily walks.

I, along with my colleagues in Manila Bulletin, roadtested a bunch of red lipsticks—just in time for the holiday season. Read below for my reviews:

The Face Shop Face It Wrinkle Repair lipstick in RD301

The Face Shop combines skincare (its specialty) with cosmetics in Face It Wrinkle Repair Lipstick. Makeup artist Marge Apacible shares her tips on how to take extra care of your puckers:
1. Use Plus+1 Dual Lip Care Kit to keep lips smooth and well-moisturized.
2. Apply liquid foundation or concealer onto lips, and dust with loose powder. This makes the lipstick last longer.
3. Draw the contours of the lips with Lovely Me: Ex Auto Lip Liner in 06 Red that matches the red lipstick. This is to prevent smudging and increase its staying power.
4. Fill in lips with Face It Wrinkle Repair Lipstick in RD301 using a lip brush for precision. Dab tissue onto lips and dust lips with loose powder. Apply a second coat.
5. Once the lipstick has been fully applied, get a cotton bud with a bit of powder foundation and glide around the lips to perfect the outline of the lips and further define its contours.

The Dizon jewelers have always celebrated their anniversaries with intimate functions, with relatives and customers-who-became-close-friends joining in the festivities. This year was a bit different. Not only did they celebrate their 33rd anniversary, it was also a tribute to their mother, the late Jul Dizon, whose birthday coincided with the event: “We want her to be proud of us as much as we are proud of her. She is continuously in our thoughts and always, our biggest inspiration.”

Held at the Rigodon Ballroom of the Peninsula Manila, guests were treated to an afternoon of cocktail of delicious bites. A fashion show served as the platform, where the sisters (Janina Dizon Hoschka, Candy, Ginny and Lucille Dizon) presented their latest creations that complemented the designs of fashion designers Dennis Lustico and James Reyes.

Fashionable guests and jewelry connoisseurs got first dibs on the sparkling accessories that were revealed after the fashion show. Janina Dizon Hoschka presented her Cross, Kaleidoscope and homme collections: “The Cross collection was a theme exhibit at a recent Celestina event, while the Kaleidoscope is my newest collection—brilliant stimulating gems that hit all colors of the spectrum.” Hoschka shares with us a few of her most sparkling designs:

Ria Bolivar wears a low V-neckline dress by Dennis Lustico, giving highlight to the operal length white sapphire tennis necklace with two hanging brooches from the Cross collection. She also wears dangling earrings made of white sapphires and spessartite garnets and a bangle made of amethysts, tsavorites and white sapphires. Her ring is made of an emerald cut smoky topaz and multi coloured white sapphires. All in silver.

Chelsea Robato, in a nude-colored dress by Dennis Lustico, wears an en suite of African rubies with white and brown zircon. Her bangles consist of rubies, sapphires, aquamarines and green emeralds. All in silver.

Maryann Umali in a low-key black number by James Reyes, has a melange of moonstones, white topaz, citrines, amethysts, quartz and peridot for her necklace and earrings from the Kaleidoscope collection. On her right wrist, is bangle made of black shagreen with a rutilated quartz and white sapphires, on the left are green quartz with diamonds. Her rings consist of a rutilated quartz with white sapphires and yellow quartz with white sapphires and tsavorites. All in silver.

Alex Vergara wears my JANINA homme necklace of white and yellow sapphires on a black leather cord. His wrists have an assortment of shagreen cuffs. His belt has a longevity slider looped in (I would like to say that this was my idea, but it really was the genius thinking of Robby Carmona) He wears the drusy agate ring with a cognac diamond. Deciding Who's In or Out

Just when you thought you’ve settled in, Mega Fashion Crew shakes things up again by bringing back 10 contestants who were booted out in the earlier episodes. Returning as wild cards, the contestants were recalled “to see drastic movements,” according to mentor and Mega Creative Director Suki Salvador. Among them is a certain fashion stylist, who got eliminated in episode 4 based on a controversial Facebook post.

Along with fellow mainstay judges, Mega’s editor-in-chief Sari Yap, designer Avel Bacudio, and model Raya Mananquil, the guesting of top fashion show director Robby Carmona is something that got the viewers glued to their TV’s last week: “I was so happy to be invited as a guest judge for Mega Fashion Crew and see the new breed of talents we have in the Philippines. The challenge was for them to create a collection, and showcase it in a fashion show.”

The contenders were in for a treat as Carmona directed the “challenge” of the stage show. “The runway will be your playground. This will be the fashion show that will decide if you are really right to be part of Mega’s Top Fashion Crew,” adds Salvador.

Get into the heads of Yap and Carmona as they share their insights on last week’s episode:

Style Kit: What do you like most about being a judge?
Sari Yap: I've said before that my life here in Mega has always been a search for talent. As a judge in Mega Fashion Crew, I do what I do every day as editor in chief of Mega—select and highlight good work. I especially enjoy when someone improves or when a talent blossoms. The competition changes people, some for the better and some for the worse, it's always entertaining to see what the next challenge will bring.
Robby Carmona: What I like most is I get to share my knowledge and experience with the next generation, at the same time, I get to see new perspective from them as well.

SK: What do you hate the most about being a judge?
SY: As a judge, it is inevitable that I have to be the bearer of bad news sometimes. To improve someone requires that you critique him and although I have no qualms about giving constructive feedback, you can never foresee how the contestants will react. All they should know though is everything we say is for the improvement of their work.
RC: Eliminating. I’m very emotional about eliminating someone from the group but I know that they will be stronger and better after.

SK: What are the common mistakes of the contestants?
SY: The contestants being young and having limited time to execute, sometimes they forget to take the time to completely study and understand the brief. This is of utmost importance to ensure great output. If you're doing a beauty editorial, consider what the brand personality is. If you're doing a catalogue, make sure that you sell the clothes.
RC: It’s basically how to effectively relay a fashion story for an audience. As you know, a fashion show in comparison to a movie, doesn't have actors who throw lines to relay a story, it’s how the collection is put together and how a model translates it on the runway.

MB: What do you think the contestants need to improve on?
SY: The contestants need to work on their polish and taste level. What separates amateurs from professionals are these two qualities. Regardless of the time pressure or the circumstances surrounding a project, every image should be aspirational and be the best showcase of each individual.

Two recent events have made Kenneth Chua one of the most sought after designers today. He made the outfit that won for Vice Ganda the Best Dressed award at the Kylie Minogue concert, as chosen by the singer herself. He was also behind the drop-dead gorgeous gown worn by Anne Curtis at the Preview Best Dressed Ball.

It was all over cyberspace and twitter when Vice Ganda won the Best Dressed award at the Kylie Minogue concert. Chua wasn’t there to witness it live, but his proud mother was the first one to share this exciting news to him. Vice Ganda’s outfit was space age in its all teal blue outfit with silver sleeves and metallic neckpiece and head wear. “Vice Ganda is more of a fashionista. I took inspiration from Lady Gaga, Rihanna, Kylie Minogue,” Chua shares about the outfit.

“For Anne (Curtis), it’s really funny. She was in a panic that time, because she didn’t have an outfit for the Preview Ball yet—that was a day before the event. Stylist Bang Pineda recommended me to her. After Anne and I exchanged text messages regarding our plan for the outfit, Liz Uy called me up asking if I could do Anne's outfit for the said event. Anne was laughing when I met her for her measurements, because both Liz and Bang recommended me. Coincidence, magikero daw kasi ako sabi ni Liz,” Chua reminisces of the sparkling, red, low V-neck and high-slit dress Curtis wore.

Not only are they both amazing creations, they were finished in less than a day. Now how’s that for fast haute couture?

Designing since 1997, Chua has a background in architecture and interior design, which can be seen in his geometric and three-dimensional works like Vice Ganda’s. Painting murals at multinational boardrooms are also in his resume, including working for a retail brand, designing bags for a Japanese leather company, and joining Tyler as a guest designer.

I attended an intimate press launch of Aura by Swarovski, a new perfume by everyone's favorite crystal.

It was held at M Cafe over a delicious lunch :)

It was a well-attended event, which was hosted by Ken of Midas Brand Management, and Jenny Yrasuegui and Celine Gabriel-Lim (their PR and Marketing arm)

Brand manager Mariless Villamar (an old colleague of mine) introduced the perfume to us. She's wearing a lovely Sassa Jimenez creation, BTW.

The city’s only perfume house, Art of Scent, welcomes another brand into its abode with the arrival of Aura by Swarovski. The world’s favorite crystal brand, Swarovski, together with Clarins Fragrance Group, has worked together in producing a special scent to crystallize the “gems” in sensual form. It is the aim of the two parties “to create a visual and olfactory aura of light, symbolizing the sparkle of a Swarovski crystal.”

Staying true to its sparkling personality, Aura by Swarovski is a fruity floral scent that certainly gives the wearer a fresh and feminine vibe. The light pink shade of the perfume is encased in a glass and chrome metal bottle that is embellished with a Swarovski crystal—what else, right? Along with the release of the perfume comes a mini collection of complementary cosmetics made up of lip gloss and highlighter that feature micronized Swarovski crystals and iridescent crystal shine powder.

A grand launch was also hosted by the distributors Midas Brand Management, with guests enjoying a private exhibit of creations made by established designers:

Joey Mead hosted the short program, with brand manager Mariless Villamar introducing the first perfume of Swarovski and a speech, toast, and video reveal by Midas Brand Management/Art of Scent’s Ken Jeswani. An after-party followed shortly at Opus with the fashionable attendees:

A Paris Dream Come True

Paris Hilton rocked Manila fittingly: there were press conferences and shoots for her Century Properties project and parties to cap the night off. Her busy itinerary ended with a “Meet and Greet” session, along with the ribbon cutting of her handbags and accessories store at The Atrium of SM Megamall.

Fans from all over the country flocked to the venue to see the Barbie doll-like heiress. Local celebrities such as Melissa Ricks, Helga Krapf, Empress Schuck, Kit-Kat, Angel Aquino, JM Rodriguez were also there to witness the official opening of the store. The first sighting of Hilton excited the crowd with cheers from all over the place, but Melissa Ricks’s reaction was the most priceless one as we saw her wiping away tears:

“One of my dreams was to meet Paris Hilton and it came true!” Ricks says. “She’s so sweet and carefree! She has fun with her life and she’s very strong despite all her intrigues.”

When Ricks became a fan: A couple of years ago when she started her show “The Simple Life.” Since then, I’ve been a fan. I bought her books and I have all her fragrances!

Hilton’s Twitter friend and fan, 20-year-old Patricia “Isha” Andrea Dinio, was also present at the event. She reminisced with us her Paris Hilton experience: “It was a dream come true, like I have to really tell myself so many times that it really happened. Magical in a sense that I've been wanting and dreaming to see her for 10 years now and, now, it happened.” Isha Dinio proudly shows off the three bags that Paris Hilton gave her.

Their cyberspace friendship had blossomed over the years, with Hilton giving her a total of three bags, eight perfumes, three shirts and accessories—all as her graduation gift to Dinio, who is now a Tourism Management graduate.

In return, Dinio gave her “a doll wearing baro't saya and a picture frame bordered with banig and Philippine Shells which I bought from Kultura.”

“Paris Hilton has been with me in the special events of my life. She tweeted me on my 20th birthday, wished me luck in my OJT at a prestigious hotel months ago, left me comments on my pictures wearing my OJT uniform, and became so proud of me when I graduated from college. Paris is really an icon everyone should know; she's sweet to all her fans, makes time for them and even replies on some tweets and letters that her fans send to her,” reveals Dinio.

Paris' schedule started with the ribbon-cutting ceremony, and ended with the Meet-and-Greet session at The Atrium of SM Megamall:

Backstage is the new front stage,” quips Mega Publishing Group’s executive group creative director Suki Salvador as the magazine conglomerate prepares to host the second season of its Mega Fashion Crew Gen M reality show on cable television. With 60 participants, the style search will look for the next top photographer, fashion stylist, makeup artist, hairstylist or female model in teams tasked to execute a fashion shoot, offering a unique peek into the fashion industry and scoping out new talents. “Life here in Mega has been a constant search for these people,” shares the magazine’s editor-in-chief, Sari Yap.

Judges for the new season include Yap, celebrity fashion designer Avel Bacudio, and top model Raya Mananquil. Mentors include Salvador and Mega magazine’s publisher and deputy editor Meryll Yan. “Aside from fabulous items and cash prize of P100,000 each, a promising career awaits the winning individuals. The five winners will also have the chance to work with the Mega editorial team for a fashion editorial,” adds Yan.

To find out what the judges and mentors would be looking for, we asked Salvador and Yan who they look up to in fashion:

Meryll Yan, Mega magazine’s publisher and deputy editor

Photographer: My favorite photographers are Annie Leibowitz and Steven Meisel. Their images are always iconic and they prove that each photo does speak a thousand words.

Hairstylist: My favorite hairstylists are Ney Guese and Jay Wee. They do lovely work with such speed and they’re fun to work with. Ney and Jay would even assist in holding a prop or throwing a couture hem up.

Makeup artist: Best makeup artist is Owen Sarmiento for fantasy and Jigs Mayuga for beauty. We love collaborating with Owen for amazing concept shoots (see Varekai ed in July). Jigs is a master when it comes to bringing out a woman’s best features. He’s an excellent face sculptor.

Stylist: Best stylist for me is Patricia Field. She is responsible for some of the most memorable outfits on film and TV and that influences everything from pop culture to what’s displayed on the shop floor.

Model: For me, the best model is Natalia Vodianova. She is such a chameleon. Locally, I love Ria Bolivar, Vanessa Matsunaga and, of course, Marina Benipayo. I remember when one makeup artist remarked to Ria in one photo that she looked “Brazilian,” she shook her head and said, “ayoko.” Now that’s Pinoy pride.

Photographer: I like a lot of photographers locally and internationally, but I gravitate towards Annie Leibovitz. Her images are extremely romantic and always full of emotion. Her photography treatment has a unique, soft focus that is unparalleled.

Hairstylist: I’m amazed by the work of Serge Normant. He put Julia Roberts in really big hair on the cover of his book Metamorphosis. Normant always provides an unconventional but sophisticated way of doing hair.

Makeup artist: I am amazed by the work of Pat McGrath. She is the favorite makeup artist of a lot of top fashion designers because she has a fresh and forward twist to doing beauty. She is able to define features while keeping the skin healthy-looking.

Stylist: Vogue Paris editor-in- chief Emanuelle Alt is my favorite stylist. I appreciate the fact that she keeps the woman’s comfort in mind all the time. I also like that she mixes both high and low pieces.

Model: Kate Moss is the top choice for models. She doesn’t try too hard to look chic. In fact, her approach to modeling has always been simplicity. Fortunately, she has great bone structure to aid her.
